Publisher's Blurb – Jacket Flaps
KEL-LO-RY – It is the Old Tongue, and its meaning is: "I will avenge".
Kellory – the last of the Black Wolves, sole descendant of the Lost Kings of Illyrion. His fighting arm maimed, his homeland stolen, his tribe mercilessly slaughtered by the dread Thungoda Horde, he seeks revenge with the only weapon left to him – sorcery. But the secret arts of witchcraft are not easily surrendered by the Brotherhood of Darkness . . .
Across the Sea of Sand, with its plethora of terrifying spells and whispering spirits of the night, Kellory seeks the Grimoire of Yaohim – the Book of Shadows – for only within its enigmatic pages will he find the sacred magic that will vanquish his enemies, if he can decipher its mystery before it's too late.
An exciting tale of swords and sorcery from Lin Carter.
Lin Carter, author of the Prince Zarkon adventure series, is a prolific writer of heroic fantasy in the tradition of Howard and Burroughs. In 1972, he received the Nova Award for his efforts in bringing long-lost books and stories to light.
Extract – Lower Cover
Kugal, chief of the Thungoda war party, felt his prestige ebb as he hesitated before the grim, dark man who blocked their path. He reined his homed horse forward, drawing his curved sword.
"Who are you, man?" he demanded harshly, letting him see naked steel.
"I am Kellory," the stranger said in a low voice. And: "Release the girl."
"Hai!" Kugal crowed, grinning. "One man – no steel – and you give orders to Thungoda!" He laughed, thin lips peeling back to reveal discolored tusks. Then, in the way of his Horde, his temper changed. He snarled, spitting viciously, and suddenly his narrow, slitted eyes were cold with venom.
"I cut your guts out with this," he spat, showing Kellory the sword again, "and make you eat them!"
Kellory did not move. His green eyes were wintry and his voice was as low as a whisper as he said:
"Set the girl free and go your way, Thungoda. Or you shall kneel at the feet of Pnom in the Kingdom of Shadows before the world's an hour older."
It was not a boast; not even a threat. There was the quiet ring of certitude to his words. It was a promise.
