"I hold supreme power of life and death . . . Surrender, Zarkon – or die!"

Knickerbocker City was paralyzed with fear. Two banks had been disintegrated by fiendishly targeted earthquakes. And the latest message from Lucifer, arch-villain and criminal mastermind, who had escaped from prison with his nefarious henchmen, was clearly a challenge to the city's last hope of rescue, Prince Zarkon and his Omega Men. But what good are their atomic submarines, scanner probes, and fantastical, foe-flattening firearms if they can't locate the malignant genius behind the plot? It is a dark hour for Knickerbocker and all mankind.

This is Prince Zarkon adventure #4. Zarkon is a man of mystery, a superhero who fights crime everywhere. Aided by his faithful companion Tonto – no, wait, that's the wrong show . . . In case you haven't caught on yet, Prince Zarkon is a takeoff on every pulp hero of the '30s and '40s. In a skillful and entertaining parody on everyone's favorite hero, Doc Savage, Lin Carter has created Prince Zarkon and the Omega Men, dedicated to the detection and destruction of high-level crime. So far they have fought The Hand of Death, The Grim Reaper, and a lava-covered troll. What next, the reader gasps.

Lin Carter has written over forty novels since 1965, mostly heroic fantasy in the tradition of Howard and Burroughs. He was the Fantasy editor for Ballantine Books and is responsible for bringing long-lost books and stories to light. In 1972, he received the Nova Award for his contributions.

Extract – Lower Cover
Just then a tall, swarthy, turbaned man entered the room with a tray of beverages. Handing a cocktail to Miss Mulligan with a profound bow, the imperturbable Chandra Lal set the tray down on the coffee table situated between the sofas and was about to retire as noiselessly from the room as he had entered it, when hailed by Doc Jenkins.

"Hey, Chandra, is th' Chief coming, do you know?"

"The sahib will attend you presently," said the tall Rajput in flawless English. "He is still studying reports from the Richter Institute and striving to correlate their findings with those of his own instruments."

"See, I tol' ya th' Chief'd be innerestid is this case, Fooey," said Muldoon with a sniff in Naldini's direction.

"Then you feel certain there is a case here?" inquired a quiet voice from behind them. They turned quickly to greet the striking individual who had just entered the room unnoticed through a secret door behind the bookshelves, where a hidden elevator communicated with the underground laboratories.

And Phoenicia Mulligan paled, bit her lip, drew in a long, unsteady breath, eyes misting dreamily.

For it was Prince Zarkon – the Master of Omega.
