In Lord Valentine's Castle Robert Silverberg introduced us to the giant world of Majipoor, a place teeming with humans and exotic aliens, full of strangeness and adventure. It was immediately acclaimed as one of the great inventions of modern science fiction, worthy of comparison with Dune. In Majipoor Chronicles – not a sequel to the first book but an entirely independent companion volume – he returns to explore the planet's complex and colourful landscape from a series of different perspectives, ranging across its long history and immense terrain.

The ten stories reflect the endless variety of life on Majipoor. "Thesme and the Ghayrog" tells of a girl living alone in the jungle who chances upon an injured Ghayrog – one of the many alien species to be found on the world – and of the strange relationship that develops between them as she nurses him back to health. "In the Fifth Year of the Voyage" is the story of an attempt to circumnavigate the vast planet which falters when the ship becomes trapped in a morass of dragon-grass, a strange organism which feeds off the metal of its hull. "The Desert of Stolen Dreams" introduces a machine which can influence people's dreams, and its user becomes Majipoor's first King of Dreams. "Voriax and Valentine" is an incident in the early life of the future Coronal, prefiguring the events of Lord Valentine's Castle.

These are tales of life and love, conflict and discovery, adventures of every kind set within and around the backdrop of Majipoor, everything interwoven in structure to form a rich portrait of an imaginary world.
