Notes
Child of Time, a novel by Robert Silverberg, based on Lastborn, a 1958 novellette by Isaac Asimov.

Also published as The Ugly Little Boy (Doubleday, 1992).

The original novellete by Isaac Asimov, also known as The Ugly Little Boy, was first published in Galaxy Science Fiction (September 1958), and was subsequently published in a number of collections of Asimov's short fiction including Nine Tomorrows (Doubleday, 1959).

After the novelisation of Nightfall in 1990, Lastborn was the next of Isaac Asimov's short stories to be expanded by Robert Silverberg.

Publisher's Blurb – Jacket Flap
Timmy is a little boy. He's four years old. And he was born forty thousand years ago . . .

Set in the near future and the distant past, CHILD OF TIME is the story of a Neanderthal child snatched from his own time and people and brought forty thousand years into his future in a daring and controversial scientific experiment.

To the scientists, 'Timmy' is a guinea pig; to human rights campaigners he's a Cause; to ordinary people, he's a monster, sub-human, retarded, an object of fear and revulsion. Only Edith Fellowes, the nurse hired by Stasis Technologies Ltd to look after him, sees Timmy for what he really is – a lonely and terrified little boy, lost in an alien world. As Edith struggles to help the traumatised child a relationship of love and trust begins to develop between them. But in the distant past, Timmy's tribe, baffled by his disappearance, confront a new mystery: a strange tribe, who look different, speak differently, violate their sacred places – and want their land.

Edith soon discovers that despite his disconcerting appearance, Timmy really is no different from a normal four-year-old – but one who can never be allowed into the outside world and who the outside world will never leave alone. But when it becomes apparent that Stasis Technologies have a cruel and calculated fate in store for Timmy, Edith has to make a momentous and frightening decision . . .

Following the success of NIGHTFALL ('One of the best SF reads this year' – The Times) this new collaboration by two of science fiction's greatest writers is based on Asimov's classic short story 'The Ugly Little Boy'.
