The text was cut by the author prior to publication at the request of the publisher. The original uncut version was published in 1990.
First published as a serial in Galaxy (September, October and November 1951 issues). The version of the text published in Galaxy was further cut by editor H.L. Gold, who also rewrote some sections of prose.
